Paul views fallen Adam as the progenitor of the whole human family, the representative protohuman. Adam's sin put a stranglehold on every human being, Jewish and Gentile. As Paul writes later, "We have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under the power of sin" (Rom. 3:9). The only possible way out of the stranglehold is by God's powerful gift of grace in Jesus Christ crucified and raised, the new Adam. The resurrected Christ thus becomes the representative prototype of the new humanity now under way and soon to become fully revealed.

Verse 11, however, is not Paul's thanksgiving for benefits but his hope that many others will have occasion to give thanks in the future. The language of 1:811 opens the explicitly persuasive element of the letter (so Talbert: 134; R. ; Fallon: 13-15; Watson: 1-6). In the strict sense, verses 3-7 express a blessing thus: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. . (1:3). It consists of a marvelous paean of praise to the God who consoles the afflicted. Woven into this liturgical language of praise is the paradoxical principle that the affliction of one yields the salvation and consolation of others: primarily Christ for others, resulting in Paul for others (the Corinthians in this case).
